All set for Gaths Mine athletics meet

OVER 29 clubs will battle it out at the two-day annual Gaths Mine Track and Field event, which roars into life tomorrow.

“>The annual track and field extravaganza is being held at Gaths Mine.

Organiser of the tournament Percy Ngwenya told IndependentSport yesterday that over 29 clubs had confirmed participation at the tournament.

“Over 29 clubs have confirmed participation and 220 athletes will participate though the number is set to increase as some are still registering,” said Ngwenya who is the national convenor of selectors (track and field). Top clubs billed to participate at the event include Shabanie, Gaths Mine, Ashanti, Lancashire Steel and Zisco, among others.

Top athletes to take part in the tournament include 5 000m specialist Lewis Masunda, Themba Ncube, Marko Mambo and Gabriel Chikomo among others.

Masunda and Ncube were in top form at the just Southern Africa Permit tri-nation series that ended in Namibia a fortnight ago.

Ngwenya said the event would also be used to commemorate the World Athletics Day.

“We will distribute some brochures and t-shirts from the mother body (IAAF),” he said.

Ngwenya said certificates of participation will also de distributed from IAAF.

Ngwenya said the tournament would be used as a selection process for both the Southern African track and field event World Youth championship.

Zimbabwe host the track and field event from July 3-4 at the National Sports Stadium.

The 4th IAAF World Youth Championship would be held in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh from July 13-17.

Ngwenya said mining teams would use the tournament to prepare for the Chamber of Mines tourney in Hwange at the end of July.
