THE conquering Harare Sports Club I (HSC I) are favourites to win the Shepherd Muchinguri Memorial Rugby Sevens Tournament at the University of Zimbabwe in Harare tomorrow.
Twelve teams from across the country will participate at the tournament in honour of the late Muchinguri, who was a university player and also contributed immensely to the development of rugby in the country.
Muchinguri died in February this year after a short illness. His family provided $2 million for the tournament and of that amount $800 000 would be given as prize money. The late Muchinguri was very instrumental in securing sponsorship for University and the Zimbabwe Rugby Union tournament played last year.
He also spearheaded the founding of Mutare-based Mountain Lions which will also play tomorrow.
The other teams that will participate at the tournament starting at 11am are Matabeleland I, II and III, Old Hararians, University and Mabvuku, HSC II, Shabanie Mine and Bulldogs.
HSC I are currently in trailblazing form and last week dismissed Matabeleland II 21-17 in the first series of the national finals played in Bulawayo.
It was HSC’s fifth win on the trot under the guidance of National Sevens Rugby team player/coach John Ewing.
