MDC fires Chitungwiza councillors

THE Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) has fired all its 24 councillors in the municipality of Chitungwiza for  defying party directives, among a host of other alleged misdeeds.

Party spokesperson Nelson Chamisa confirmed in an interview yesterday that the councillors had been dismissed for “corruption and general rotten behaviour”.

Chamisa said: “They are no longer MDC councillors. They have been fired for lack of good governance, accountability, failure to deliver and to live up to the mandate given them by the people. They have also been dismissed for defying the party.

“They have been fired for placing wrong priorities in the discharge of their duties –– it’s a whole litany of complaints from residents and the party that has necessitated their dismissal.”

He added that investigations into the councillors’ corruption and indiscipline had been completed and the report was “very disturbing”.

The councillors on Monday defied a party directive to elect Vincent Gwaradzimba as mayor to replace Israel Marange who has been jailed for corruption.

They ganged up against the directive and voted for Alderman Philimon Chipiyo to the post and brought back Rangarirai Mutingwende who had been suspended by the party to take up the post of deputy mayor.

They however may remain in office as independent councillors or could, as some observers say, defect en masse to another party.
