The race has already drawn the interest of Olympic bound athlete Wirimai Juwawo, who recently qualified for the global sporting event last weekend at the Volkswagen Prague Marathon race, in Czech Republic with an A standard time of 2hrs 14min 38sec.
Other athletes expected to be part of the race are Point Chaza, Charles Soza and the upcoming star Millen Mutende. Both male and female runners are expected to compete in the 42 km, 21 km and 5 km races.
Organiser of the race, Hazvirambe Madzinga said preparations for the race were at an advanced stage adding that they were still to announce the prize money for the winners.
“We are expecting over 500 marathon runners at this event. Since the province is rich in diamonds, this is where we came up with the name of the race. Very soon we will be announcing the total sponsorship packages of the race, but many companies like Metropolitan Bank, MBCA Bank, Mazara service station, have come on board to sponsor the event,’’ Madzinga said.
Long-distance runner Juwawo, who is targeting a top finish at the marathon, believes that this would be a good preparation for the 2012 London Olympics.
“ I will be taking part in the race. I will be using this to fine-tune myself ahead of the Olympics,” he said.
