Mutare looking for ways to revamp traffic light system

MUTARE — Only 10% of traffic lights in the city of Mutare are working, a city official has said.

Town Clerk Obert Muzawazi last week said most of the traffic lights had outlived their lifespan, making them very costly and difficult to maintain.

“As council, we admit that this is the situation. However, we have inherited this dilemma from the previous council office bearers,” said Muzawazi. “Another point is that the traffic lights have outlived their lifespan which is 20 years.”

He said the council was also facing problems in sourcing the spare parts as they were no longer in supply.

“We are negotiating with the Infrastructure Development Bank of Zimbabwe (IDBZ) for a US$1,7 million loan facility in order for us to rehabilitate the traffic lights. We also hope that the Ministry of Finance will come to our rescue,” he added.

Muzawazi said the council was also exploring an option to exchange a piece of land with the bank for a loan.
