SRC blasts Zifa

Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) director general Charles Nhemachena said the lack of long-term planning at Zifa has cost the nation a place at the 2013 Afcon finals in South Africa.

“We cannot hope to qualify by chance. What we need are long-term plans at Zifa and not this idea that each successive board comes with its plans. Right now we are almost recycling coaches without developing them,” said Nhemachena.

“In the past we paid Valinhos US$15 000, but it would have been prudent to engage a local coach who would be paid far less and then invest the rest in the development of local coaches. If we are going to continue the way we are, we will always blame the coaches for our failures. However, I am happy that most of these players are young,”.

Nhemachena added that the corporate world should not come at the last minute to help in sports development.

“We appreciate the input brought about by companies, but unfortunately most of the times it comes rather late. The corporate world should rather assist in the build-up to the tournament as well as in development,” he said.
