Robbery suspect shot at bus terminus

A suspected armed robber from Sibombo village under Chief Mabikwa in Lupane was recently shot and injured by police at Bulawayo’s Renkini bus terminus.

Jacob Washington Ndebele (25)  was not asked to plead to charges of armed robbery when he was brought before magistrate Takundwa Witness Mtetwa at the United Bulawayo Hospital (UBH), where he is admitted under police guard.

It is the state case that on March 24 2013 at 7:30pm  Ndebele stormed Better Future Supermarket in Bulawayo and produced a pistol before ordering everyone to lie down.

He closed the shop and allegedly instructed the till operator to pack all the money in a plastic bag.

Ndebele also allegedly robbed the till operator of two cellphones before disappearing with US$1 000.

On March 29 at 9:30pm, the state says Ndebele allegedly arrived at Umhambi beer garden where he again produced a pistol before demanding cash from the barman.

He was however disturbed by other patrons forcing him to flee with a bottle of Chateau brandy.

On March 31 at 7am,  the state says Ndebele went to Spar Cool Land Supermarket in Cowdray Park where he produced a pistol and ordered everyone to lie down demanding cash.

One of the customers, Beauty Chiumba, resisted the order.  Ndebele allegedly shot at her but missed.

He then ran away, with the public in hot pursuit.

Chiumba hit him with an empty bottle but he managed to escape.
The accused was later apprehended at the bus terminus and will stay in custody until April 19.
