Nyahora, who has for the past years, been in the books of Nedbank Running Club, is expected to pose a stiff challenge to last month’s ladies Spar Pretoria race winner Makanya, as she aims to improve on her previous position.

Makhanya won the race in 33 minutes 37 seconds, while Nyahora came fourth in 34 minutes 32 seconds. All the top four finishers managed to beat the standing record of 34 mins 50 seconds set by Rene Kalmer in 2011.

Last year’s Grand Prix winner, Kalmer came second in 33,56, while Nedbank Running Club Central Gauteng teammate, Irvette van Zyl (formerly Van Blerk) finished third in 34,21 with Nyahora coming fourth. Nyahora also won this year in the City to City 10 km race.

Nedbank spokesperson commended the female athletes for their performances.

“They all have been doing well. Kalmer is improving daily thanks to the tough hills around Wanderers. She is a favourite to take line honours this time after winning the South African 21km title in East London two weeks ago,” the spokesperson said.

The newest member of the Nedbank Green Dream Team, Ethiopia’s Yeshimebet Tadesse Bifa, who has a best time of 31 minutes for a 10km, is also another favourite to win today’s race.

Yeshimebet boasts a time of one hour 11 minutes for the 21km and has broken the two hours 30 minute mark on four occasions in a marathon.

Her personal best time of two hours 26 minutes was set in Seoul.
