Mariga awarded six-year tennis scholarship

Mutare’s Mantas Tennis Academy tennis star Taremekedzwa Mariga has been awarded a six-year tennis scholarship in the United States.

The country’s top junior player left the country recently ahead of his new adventure which is set to improve his tennis career at Seward County Community College.

Mariga (17), is set to join the country’s former Under-18 number one player Ronzai Saurombe, who is also enrolled at the same college. Saurombe left the country last year in August.

The soft-spoken star becomes the 39th player from the academy to win a tennis scholarship in the United States after Genious Chidzikwe who was the first in 1996.

Another Mantas star player Pauline Chawafambira is expected to leave the country this month for USA on a six-year tennis scholarship at the same college.

In an interview with Standardsport last week, Mantas head coach Freeman Nyamunokora confirmed the development, adding that the player would be exposed to improved playing time.

“Taremekedzwa left the country last week for the US for his tennis scholarship that he won at Seward College. He is a talented player; last year he won two local tournaments, becoming the country’s number one Under-18 player after Ronzai Saurombe left the country in August last year,” he said.

“He also helped Manicaland to win the inter-provincial championships last year. We are just hoping that he is going to improve his career in the US. He is the 39th player to win a tennis scholarship in the US from our academy,” said Nyamunokora
