Several injured in kombi accident

At least seven people including a baby were injured when a commuter omnibus they were travelling in from Granary, smashed into a Honda CVR yesterday morning in Harare.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Samora  Machel  Avenue and Rekai Tangwena Avenue.

The kombi collided with the Honda CVR vehicle, sending it flying some metres off the ground and landing into a nearby maize field.

When The Standard crew arrived at the scene, the victims were receiving first aid while waiting for ambulances.

The driver of the Honda CVR, who was travelling alone, sustained serious injuries while some passengers in the kombi had varying degrees of injuries.

Eye witnesses said the kombi driver went through a red robot leading to the collision.

An ice-cream vendor along Samora Machel Avenue told The Standard that the kombi driver fled from the scene.

“He just got out of the kombi and ran into the maize field despite his injured head,” she said.

Another eye witness Tonderai Mushonga said the kombi driver was not at fault but it was the Honda CVR driver who turned in front of the oncoming omnibus.

Police officers on the ground could not give details and referred the news crew to the police spokesperson.

The victims were taken in turns to various hospitals in Harare.

Police spokesperson Charity Charamba could not be reached for comment by the time of going to print.
