Rising gospel singer Zvikomborero Nyashonjeka, simply known as Zviko in music circles, says local gospel music has grown in leaps and bounds over the years, thanks to the recognition it has received from fans across the country.
Zviko, a second-year Economic History student at the University of Zimbabwe, told this publication that gospel music had transcended over other genres to become one of the most-sought-after in the country.
The 21-year-old musician was among locals that performed at the Global Worship and Communion Service with Pastor Chris held in Zimbabwe two years ago.
“I would say there is definitely a rise in the reception of gospel music in the country considering the fact that they are recognising and appreciating gospel artistes across several platforms,” Zviko said.
A congregant at the Christ Embassy church, Zviko singled out her appearance at the Global Worship and Communion Service with Pastor Chris as one of her greatest accomplishments in her quest to bring honour and glory to God through worship.
She was only 19 when he she shared the stage with the world-acclaimed gospel diva and Nigerian Sinach, who happens to be her role model.
“When I sing I minister, it’s personal to me and it’s always a great experience. It was amazing to have a lot of people receive my music so positively at the Global Worship and Communion Service with Pastor Chris. It’s very motivating,” she said.
“I look up to Sinach and I think she is one of the greatest music ministers of our time. However, the Holy Spirit is my greatest inspiration and is where I draw the content I sing about.”
Zviko grew up in Mutare and later came to Harare where she attended Old Windsor Primary School and Queen Elizabeth Girls High before enrolling at the University of Zimbabwe.
“I began to write my songs at the age of 12 because I always had an interest in music since I was young,” she said.
“I recorded my first songs in 2017 when I met my producer EJ, who owns the recording label, Truth Records, and then I released my first single in 2018 called I Love You Jesus.”
Last year she released an EP titled The Greatest, working with artistes such as J Soldier and EJ the producer, who is also a musician. The EP carries tracks like Because of You, The Greatest, The Mandate, For My Good and I Love You Lord.
Zviko is working on another project that is expected to be released later this year.
“I am so excited about it so be on the lookout for this one. I focused on my favourite genres and I believe that it will encourage people to be strong in Christ and to know who they are in Christ,” she said.
Zviko said apart from music, she enjoys dancing, swimming and playing basketball.
