King 98 charms East Africa

South Africa-based Zimbabwean hip-hop sensation King 98 has fallen in love with Tanzanian superstar Diamond Platnumz’s Wasafi Classic Baby (WCB) amid reports that the Zimbabwean has started shooting a video to a song he did with another musician in the East African country.

King 98 is in Tanzania courtesy of Diamond Platnumz who invited him for a media tour.

The duo is riding high following the release of the single titled Kachiri, whose video is dominating online platforms and international television channels.

Born Nasibu Abdul Juma Issack, Diamond Platnumz is one of the biggest selling acts on the continent, while his stable WCB is one of East Africa’s top record imprints.

The Tanzanian star was the first sub-Saharan African singer to get one billion views on his YouTube channel.

Over the past decade, the award-winning musician has popularised “bongo flava” — a uniquely Tanzanian beat blended of romantic melodies, an urban genre and traditional beat.

Such a resume was enough to entice King 98 who previously had collaborations with a number of regional stars, including Nigerian superstar David “Davido” Adeleke, South Africa’s hip-hop sensation Nasty C and Mozambican award-winning hip-hop sensation Edson Abel Jeremias Tchamo.

“We are here in Tanzania for a media tour, which was organised by Diamond Platnumz, thanks to Kachiri which brought the two together,” said King 98’s, manager DJ Simmz.

“We were well-received by the Tanzanians and they love our music, especially Kachiri.”

DJ Simmz, who is part of the travelling team alongside King 98’s publicity manager Steven Tsikirai, said they were looking forward to work on a number of projects with Diamond Platnumz and his WCB stable.

“On Sunday [today] we are shooting a new video of a song that King 98 did with one of Tanzania’s finest Raymond Shaban, aka Rayvanny, who is under the WCB stable. Expect a new project in the offing and its coming out soon,” he said.

Rayvanny has been working under the tutelage of Diamond Platnumz since 2016 and is best known for his song Kwetu, which introduced him to the world. The 27-year-old singer also featured Diamond Platnumz on the track Mwanza and he is one of the best-selling musicians under the WCB stable.

DJ Simmz said the production of the video was being done by the same team led by director Kenny under Zoom Extra which worked on Kachiri.

“Diamond Platnumz is supporting this production and he has offered us his production team,” he said.

In Tanzania the Zimbabwean has had radio and television interviews with a number of media houses.

On Friday and last night King 98 and Diamond Platnumz held joint shows at the Tips Lounge in Dar es Salaam. The show was sold-out.

DJ Simmz said because of Kachiri, King 98 had been offered collaborations by top artistes in Uganda and Kenya.
