Zim junior golfers set for Orange Bowl

BY MUNYARADZI MADZOKERE

HAVING represented the country with distinction both locally and on the continent for the past few years, rising golf starlet Margaret Nyamukondiwa will have an opportunity to showcase her talent to the world when she tees off at the Junior Orange Bowl International Golf Championship in the United States in January.

The Zimbabwe Ladies Golf Union (ZLGU) Open Strokeplay champion is one of the four local junior golfers, who will feature in the prestigious tournament along with three other top male juniors Michael Wallace, Matthew Bramford and Tariro November.

The Orange Bowl International Golf Championship, which is widely regarded as the world’s premier junior golf event, is scheduled for January 3 to 6 2022 at the Biltmore Golf Course in Florida, the US.

It would be the first time that any of the four would be competing at such a prestigious global junior golf event.

Nyamukondiwa makes the team for the invitational tournament on the back of winning the biggest women’s golf competition in the country the ZLGU Open back in August.

The 18-year-old golfer also finished third in the Zambia Ladies Golf Open, while she also won the Club championships in Zimbabwe.

She follows in the footsteps of her brother, Tafadzwa Nyamukondiwa, a US Collegiate golf student at Drexel University, who represented the country at Orange Bowl in 2019.

It’s also a dream come true for Heritage School student November, who was born with a bilateral clubfoot condition and has defied the odds to pursue his dream sport.

Competing at Orange will be the biggest career highlight for current number five ranked junior in Zimbabwe, who is on a golf scholarship at Heritage.

November came first in the Inter Schools Tournament while he has represented Zimbabwe at the Global Junior International tournament.

Another 17-year-old national team player Wallace who has been to the African Amateur Stroke Play and Team Championship, South African Championship as well as the Stroke Play Championships in Zimbabwean colours will be relishing the chance to rub shoulders with best junior golfers from around the globe.

Bramford has also represented the country at several tournaments outside the country including annual All-Africa Junior Golf Challenge Trophy.

The male golfers are scheduled to take part in other junior tournaments in the US in the run up to the Orange Bowl.
