With youth in mind: Spitzkop Leisure Centre: A rare jazz outlet

MOST imbibers, especially the mature ones have always had a strong affinity with jazz, which has seen most liquor outlets exclusively playing the genre either through disco or live bands.

Jazz remains a booming art form that packs out liquor outlets and one such rendezvous is Spitzkop Leisure Centre on the periphery of the capital in Snake Park area close to the Harare-Bulawayo Road.

The joint has become the talk of town offering a potpourri of entertainment throughout the week, ranging from live bands, which play jazz, blues and soul music, especially on Fridays and Saturdays.

Takunda Maravanyika, the joint’s director told Standard Style that apart from a recreation venue with an assortment of social amenities, Spitzkop Leisure Centre boasts of a bar that provides intimate jazz music.

He said the joint offers various spirits, lagers, ciders and classic cocktails complemented by sultry live jazz.

“We want to be an exclusive jazz outlet, although we would host other groups playing different genres,” Maravanyika said.

“We have our very own Spitzkop Jazz band plus we invite outside artists at least twice a month. We have both outside and inside performance stages.

“Recently we had Selmor Mtukudzi, Sir Albert and his father Bob Nyabinde and Josh Meck, just to mention a few.”

“During the days when the live bands are not playing, we will have jazz, blues and soul music available on our speakers.

“Music is one of the most essential elements of the centre; hence our tag line: ‘Home of Jazz, Blues and Soul Music’.”

Maravanyika said the joint serves various dishes and has braai facilities.

“We have ample guarded parking spaces and we offer beef, pork, chicken, and mabonzo. But here’s the catch we make our own sausages to braai,” he said.

“We have two greenhouses where we cultivate our vegetables and we make our pizzas and burgers. When I say we make I mean we actually make them from scratch, from the buns to the pizza base.”

Maravanyika said the leisure centre also caters for kids.

“We have a children’s play centre where kids can enjoy while the parents enjoy. In that regard, we have meals, including ice cream that we make on our own,” he said.

Located a stone’s throw from the White House, the joint is designed to provide patrons with a fresh, modern and recreation venue.
