Zifa begs for Fifa sanctions

By Munyaradzi Madzokere

The suspended Zifa board has once again approached the world football governing body Fifa begging for a ban after beleaguered exco leader Felton Kamambo was barred from travelling to Cameroon for the Afcon finals.

Kamambo was invited to be part of the Afcon Cup final between Senegal and Egypt.

But the latest set back for Kamambo, who has an ongoing bribery case in court has prompted the Zifa board to make a fresh bid to invite Fifa sanctions.

“We wish to inform you that our FA president Mr Felton Kamambo was today barref from travelling to Cameroon for a footbal event he had been officially invited to attend,” secretary-general Joseph Mamutse who is also suspended wrote to Fifa.

“We are informed that this was at the insistance of the SRC and a continuation of their interference on our football. While the Fifa letter has yet not come, our football continues to suffer at the hands of the SRC and we again continue to ask for Fifa intervention.

“The situation in Zimbabwe is such that football is now being run by the government and this latest act is again proof that the interference continues even long after the expiry of the deadline given by Fifa to the SRC. We wait for your guidance.”

The suspended board is looking to leverage on the fact that Fifa appears to be recognising them having been in constant communication with the Zifa board through Mamutse.

The SRC suspended the Zifa board in the aftermath of a disastrous World Cup campaign in November citing a cocktail transgressions.

In December Fifa demanded the reinstatement of the Kamambo led board by January 3 or else face sanctions which would see Zimbabwe barred from participating at the Afcon finals.

However, the SRC stuck to its guns and Fifa has remained mum much to the frustration of the Zifa board.
